To start off their 2018-2019 aptly named “Live in the Momentum”, Giordano Dance Chicago, now entering its 56th year, premiered a new, full-company work titled “SOUL” during their fall engagement at the Harris Theater on October 26. The piece is choreographed by award-winning choreographer Ray Leeper. Leeper is one of the most respected artists in the dance industry with an extensive list of credits including “X-Factor UK,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “The Big Bang Theory,” and many more. “Ray’s connection with [Giordano Dance Company] began many years ago when my father, [company founder] Gus Giordano, pulled the tween-aged Ray up on stage during a workshop at a dance convention” says Giordano Dance Chicago Artistic Director Nan Giordano. “SOUL” is not the first work Leeper created for the company. He previously choreographed ‘Feelin’ Good Sweet’ in 2014.
“SOUL” is choreographed in honor of Candace Jordan, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune columnist, “whose spirit, passion, and advocacy for the performing arts are without bounds.” Both were present in the audience for the World Premier. With dazzling costumes and lively music from Gladys Knight and the Pips, Al Green, and Tina Turner, the company commanded the stage and the audience with the energetic performance. At the end, the company left the stage to dance with the crowd continuing the lively production “SOUL” is guaranteed to be a crowd favorite. The fall engagement also included performances of “JOLT,” “Sidecar,” “Loose Cannon,” and “Divided Against” showcasing the many talents of the company. Giordano Dance continues to cement itself as one of the premiere dance companies in the country. If “SOUL” is any indication of the season to come, the city of Chicago and the world of dance are in for a treat.
