Under the Stars Event

What: A Night of Food, Spirits and Entertainment.

When: Friday, August 21, 2009, 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Where: Rooftop Sculpture Garden of 117 N. Jefferson (4th floor)

Enjoy: The TVK Orchestra, a jazz trio regularly featured at Green Dolphin Street.


For nearly 17 years, the StreetWise publication and its vendors have been a familiar urban icon that dot Chicago's concrete landscape. Over the years, this weekly publication has enabled over 8,000 men and women to become financially self-sufficient and gainfully employed.

However, StreetWise is much more than a magazine sold by the homeless and those who are at risk of becoming homeless. StreetWise is a bridge to those it serves, leading them from the disappointment of few opportunities to a life full of potential and hope. Just as StreetWise encourages its vendors to grow, StreetWise continues to mold its Mission. StreetWise has rolled out a Workforce Training and Education Program offering mentoring, higher-education, job training and life skills programs. StreetWise is rebooting lives even better than before.


The August 21 rooftop event will be a celebration of this new program and will honor several guests, including:

  • Five champion StreetWise vendors - Patricia Tillman, Glenn Hughes, Cloceal Holman, Roger Jacobson and Craig Barrow, all top graduates of the Local Economic and Employment Development (LEED) Council higher education initiative.
  • Jon Reinsdorf, chairman of the Workforce Training and Education Committee and pioneer of the program and its partnership with LEED.
  • Kevin Ward, a volunteer coordinating the one-on-one Mentorship Program that was a major factor in the success of this pilot project.
  • Alderman Manny Flores, a strong supporter and advocate of the StreetWise cause who brought unparalleled attention to the importance of StreetWise to the Chicago community.
